On September 17, 1854, Ischia opened its port thanks to the intuition of King Ferdinand II of Bourbon. What was the ancient “Lago de Bagni” was transformed into a port to facilitate a more convenient landing in order to reach the island and especially the Aragonese Castle.
Work began in July 1853, and many men from the Bourbon prisons of the Aragonese Castle took part in the construction. The opening of the port represents a crucial moment in the history and economic development of the island.
To celebrate this event, a festival is organized on September 17 during which the harbor is completely emptied of boats, thus re-enacting what was once the festival of the time amid period clothing and music. Entertainment, spectacle, wholesome food and fireworks liven up the evening. In 2024, the port of Ischia will be 170 years old.
