Il Monastero stands in Ischia’s Aragonese Castle, suspended 113 meters above the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. It includes the Hotel, the Kitchen, The Bistro, and the Gallery/Bookshop. Between the 16th and 18th centuries it was a convent; today it offers hospitality to travelers who love sobriety and beauty.

Run by Cristina and Nicola Mattera, the third generation of owners of the Castle, Il Monastero collects the family’s artistic legacy; on the walls, paintings and drawings by their father painter Gabriele and works by artist friends: Leonardo Cremonini, Raffaele Iacono, Elio Waschimps, Salvatore Basile.

Here it is possible to experience from morning to night that dream of slowness which is our idea of hospitality: the rest in the rooms that were once the former cloistered convent and enjoy majestic views of the Castle’s architecture, over the sea and Ischia Ponte; a lazy breakfast on the panoramic terrace; lazing in the quiet garden-garden, fragrant with flowers and herbs. The coolness of a swim in the azure of St. Anna Bay and lunch under the shelter of the bistro’s shady pergola, amid bougainvillea, prickly pear, cicadas and soaring seagulls. A visit to the Aragonese Castle and some shopping in the gallery/bookshop, where you can discover artifacts and works of absolute originality. At sunset, aperitifs-with a wide choice of classic cocktails and a selection of the best gins-will conclude with dinner, with chef Michelangelo Iacono‘s tasting menus that pay homage to island traditions, while admiring from the terrace the spectacle of the island lighting up.

For many of the guests The Monastery becomes a place of the soul, to be dreamed of in winter and to which they return as soon as possible.
